Stark Reality

Artist Jane Birrell MacKenzie

20cm x 20cm canvas

I was concerned to try and show the facelessness of this disease- it can happen to any of us; and for this reason, I elected not to actually show Louise's face in the final paintings, even although I had done an exploratory sketch of her portrait in the initial stages.

The smaller of my two final pieces is about the fear and the desperate reality of this disease, it is called “Stark Reality” and deliberately depicts Louise's torso as cold and pale with the scar a jagged and angry red slash across her chest. I chose cold colours to enhance the grim, cold truth of mastectomy and used red slashes coming in from the right hand side to suggest the invasion of the disease.
