Iron Lotus

Srinidhi Krishnamoorthy

“Her battle, or her war to win? To fight with all her might?
No winners here, or soldiers brave, no heroes in the night”

This ceramic piece, made from Stoneware, takes the abstract shape of a Lotus. The Lotus being a soft, feminine, delicate natured flower, floating cautiously atop the water represents the fragility and evanescence of the woman.

The metallic tones of the iron coating, created using a mixture of inks, stains and varnish, represent the tough, impenetrable nature of a soldiers armour, worn to symbolise the brave face these individuals must put on to the public, to constantly appear strong and invincible.

The juxta position of the feminine fragile lotus, with the heavy metallic strength of iron is meant to represent the mental state of an individual faced with a breast cancer diagnosis.

Constantly expected to remain strong and positive, running one 5k after another to raise awareness and money . . . yet behind this iron veil lies a delicate flower, merely mortal. Though she tries to stay afloat, the iron weighs her down.
